HBO Renews Sharon Horgan Comedy ‘Youth’ For a Season 2

HBO has given a Season 2 order to “Youth,” the latest series from Peabody and BAFTA winner Sharon Horgan. The series’ Season 1 is currently streaming on HBO Max.

In the show, Horgan plays a 50-year-old divorcee navigating relationships, her ailing parents and her troubled son, who isn’t quite gelling at his new college.

Horgan plays Alex in the series, which also stars Rupert Friend (Patrick), Sharlene Whyte (Sam), Aran Murphy (Ruari), and Robbie Gee (Frank). Season 1 consisted of eight episodes.

“I’m so happy to get another opportunity to live out my emotional and biological crises on HBO,” Horgan said in a statement. “I can’t think of a better platform to air my UTI problems on. The response to ‘Youth’ has been beyond what I could have hoped for. I’m so grateful for the response and the chance to work with this incredible cast and creative team once more.”

According to HBO, “Youth” ranks “among the top five HBO comedy launches globally.” The show has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics have been positive — including Variety, which lauded Horgan for her “magnetic screen presence” and as “a sharp comic writer.”

“In a way that only she can, Sharon has created a show that makes us howl with laughter and with tears — often in the same moment,” said Amy Gravitt, the exec VP of HBO Programming and head of HBO & HBO Max comedy series. “Each performance in ‘Youth’ is more delightful than the next. Along with our partners at Merman, we are so thrilled to have this brilliant ensemble back for another season.”

Merman (“Amandaland,” “Bad Sisters,” “Vladimir”) is behind “Youth.” Sharon Horgan stars in, writes and executive produces the series. Additional executive producers are Faye Dorn for Merman, Jim Kleverweis and Dawn Shadforth, who also directs.
